A passion for PKU
Although she had always planned to be a children’s dietitian, Dr MacDonald’s decision to devote her attention to PKU was made while still an undergraduate when she visited a children’s hospital and saw the difference that diet makes to outcome for a PKU child. After university, she started working with PKU patients and has been working in this field ever since. We asked her how the management of PKU has changed over the course of her career to date, about new treatment strategies and about the challenges of encouraging adherence to diet by patients.
