Serono Symposia International Foundation (SSIF) will gather a team of leading international experts in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) on May 18 - 19 in Valencia in order to attend the 2012 CME Annual Meeting in Multiple sclerosis entitled “MS: from disease management to patient management” and to discuss current and future approaches to the treatment of the neurological disease.
David Bates - from the Department of Neurology Royal Victoria Infirmary Newcastle upon Tyne, UK - and Xavier Montalban, from the Multiple Sclerosis Centre of Catalonia, Unit of Clinical Neuroimmunology Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona - are the two Scientific organizers of the event.
“The aims of the 2012 Annual Meeting are to provide an update on the latest understanding of MS pathophysiology and the mechanism of action of current drugs” – said David Bates – and to discuss the best way to diagnose patients and monitor treatment response in order to provide guidance on how to ensure that patients gain optimal benefit from the treatment.”
The meeting is divided into four sessions: we will cover the pharmacological targets of available and possible future therapies - Xavier Montalban explained – and the requirements for close safety monitoring of the most recent therapies – the expert added – besides, we shall analyse the best way for neurologists to use the available tools in order to predict the disease’s course.”
Furthermore, the last sessions will focus on current and future techniques to monitor the patients’ response to treatment beside the clinical management of MS and the relationship between the patient and neurologist, intended as a major element that can effect treatment adherence. Participants will be shown case studies and be able to discuss various aspects of clinical practice.”
