Overview

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a growing epidemic in the Asia-Pacific countries, mainly due to the acquisition of a western life-style and the increasing occurrence of obesity. The complications and comorbidities associated with such conditions are an increasing burden to the healthcare systems and professionals of the region, also because of the lack of standardised guidelines for their care and appropriate management in this setting. ThyroiddisordersareverycommonintheAsia-Pacificregion, themainreason being the endemic iodine deficiency in such population causing goiter and gland dysfunction. Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and thyroid nodules are common problems for the healthcare professionals of these countries and represent a challenge for the healthcare systems in terms of early diagnosis, standard of treatment and possibly prevention.
The management of this disease and its complications and comorbidities is a big challenge, especially for the health care systems of Asia Pacific nations, considering also the low level of budgets that are dedicated to it. This situation is also a challenge for the local medical schools and institutions which have to prepare and train the health care professionals who will handle such problems. The aims of the EXCEMED CME Course on clinical diabetes and thyroid management are to prioritize diabetes and thyroid care and then to increase awareness of its prevention in developing nations, thus creating diabetes ambassadors able to manage patients wherever they are needed according to international guidelines and clinical evidence-based medicine.
The current state of detection and prevention of these conditions in the local economy will be examined and attendees will explore models of the future development of services, together with the potential impact on their own medical careers. The CME Course will provide a mixture of lectures and interactive sessions. The lectures will be presented by a speaker supported by slides, but will include ample opportunity for participants to ask questions. The interactive session will focus on discussions of individual cases, and each will be presented by participants with a faculty member who will discuss the case with the attendees by eliciting the ideas on differential diagnosis, investigations and management strategies.
Attendees will have the opportunity during the live educational course to reflect on the factual knowledge that has been provided and will be able to deepen and extend their knowledge through direct contact with the faculty.

Learning objectives

After attending the CME course, attendees will be able to:

  • Evaluate subjects with altered glycemia and implement therapeutic solutions
  • Recognize the thyroid disorders from their diagnosis to different therapies
