Clinical and Research Activity
Since she was a student, Dr Teresa Rago has frequented the wards and clinic of the Istituto of Endocrinologia, Metodologia Clinica e Medicina del Lavoro at Pisa University, and she underwent a long specialist training period in the outpatients department dedicated to endocrine pathologies and, in particular, in specific thyroid pathologies, the performance of ultrasound and fine needle aspiration, so gaining a high degree of clinical experience. She has also performed clinical and experimental research projects in the endocrine-metabolic
field, with particular interest towards autoimmune phenomenon of thyroid pathologies, endemic goiter and nodular pathologies and disorders caused by insufficient iodine intake.
Dott. Teresa Rago has from many years investigate causes and effects of iodine deficiency and effect of iodine prophylaxis.
She actively participated in epidemiological investigations that were performed by the Institute over the territory of Tuscany and Basilicata to define the level of iodine deficiency and the spectrum of thyroid disorder in mild to moderate iodine deficiency in Italy. Research performed by Dr Teresa Rago in this sector has above all been focused on the study of patients affected by endemic goiter, Hashimoto thyroiditis and Graves’ disease. Some specific aspects of epidemiology were considered in the study of endemic goiter.
Her clinical research has been performed using traditional thyroid ultrasound and eco-color Doppler as diagnostic supports for autoimmune thyroid disease and in thyroid nodule. She has also acquired a significant experience in the technique and use of fine needle aspiration in thyroid nodule. In clinical research has used in recent years, the elastosonography, the most recent ultrasound technique in the evaluation of nodular thyroid disease.
In Clinical Research has acquired experience in treating thermal ablative laser light in nodular thyroid disease. He has participated as an investigator in Protocol Multicentric Randomized Controlled Study of PLA Versus Benign Thyroid Nodules in the Follow Up. Long term results "IALT (no. 2527/2008). He has participated as an investigator in the protocol" percutaneous laser treatment of thyroid nodule and characterization ipocaptante ultrasound.'' Project TRAP (integrated innovative technologies and methods for laser-guided percutaneous ablative treatments by ultrasound imaging.
